It has many practical features for all-weather riding (horses or bicycles!), or it can be stripped down to a very easy-to-make duster for men or women. The original version, View B, is ready for the range with wrist tabs, elbow patches, and a detachable shoulder cape. Leg tabs and the long fantail vent in center back cleverly wrap around to form a type of legging for added body and saddle protection while riding. The front opening is covered with a rectangular flap for wind and rain protection, and the partial lining adds warmth. The basic, clean shape and essential details alone comprise View A, an over-everything coat. The raglan sleeves with wrist tabs, rectangular collar, collar tabs and patch/flap pockets add just enough style to this unlined duster, which can be made in a few hours. Both roomy coats fasten with heavy-duty gripper snaps and can be made in a variety of fabrics, waterproof or not. Lore and authentic detailing inside this pattern provide information on waterproofing fabrics for these garments. A thick turtleneck sweater, knit in a small wings stitch, is perfect for layering in cold weather. Knitting pattern is included.

Celebrity royals like the duke and Duchess of Windsor. Scandalous fashion designers like Chanel and Schiaparelli. As Americans began to pull out of the Great Depression, they watched and mimicked the fun and fancy ways of the wealthy as best they could. World War II was yet to come and U.S. Citizens reveled in an upbeat, although naive, mood. Fashions toward the end of the decade combined the frugality of the lean Depression years with touches of Hollywood extravagance. Our 1930’s Day Dress uses fabric economically, yet manages to look chic and trendy for its time. View A, drafted from an original dress (ca. 1939), features round neckline with collar points, short sleeves, dropped back waistline, back zipper, and a peplum that is cleverly cut on the straight of grain but creates the slimming look of a bias cut. Unpressed tucks in the front eliminate the need for bust darts and create the fashionable broad-shouldered look of the period. View B is our designer’s variation of the original design and has a more casual look. It is perfect for your next boardwalk stroll or dance marathon. It features buttoned front bodice, back zipper, flounce collar and sleeves, and eyelash pockets with flounce pocket bands. Both dresses have a slightly flared skirt that is flattering on everyone.
