Whether you like it or not, swatching is essential if you want your handknits to end up the correct size. In this tutorial, we show you how to knit an accurate gauge swatch, both in the round and flat, as well as measuring gauge across complex stitch patterns.
Knit
Gauge is a very important part of knitting. It affects the finished measurements of your knitted item, its drape, and overall look. It also determines how much yarn you will need for a specific project, and what needles you should use. Gauge is crucial when you are knitting a garment, that needs to fit: hats, socks, sweaters, etc. Since you want your knit garment to be the right size and fit, you need to pay attention to your gauge. This way you will be happy with your knitted item, and will actually wear it.

Blooming Lavender socks knitting pattern
Knitting pattern only The ‘Blooming Lavender’ sock knitting pattern was created with the inspiration of lavender and their upright flower spikes and long green foliage. These socks are knit from the cuff down with a 1×1 ribbed cuff, an eye of patridge heel-flap and gusset (alternative heels can be substituted) and have a section of colourwork on the leg and a small section before the toe decreases. This pattern uses the magic loop circular needle method (but can easily be knit with dpns). This pattern has step by step English instructions with charts for the colourwork sections. There are two different stitch counts for the colourwork section on the leg. One for a small/medium size and one for large (or for any knitters with high heel arches). The needles size is also chosen according to the size required and gauge for the colourwork section. •Small (foot circumference 19-20cm) 2.25mm (US1) needles, 38sts x 40 rounds 10cm •Medium (foot circumference
21-22cm) 2.5mm (US1.5) needles, 34sts x 38 rounds 10cm •Large (foot circumference 23-24cm) 2.75mm (US2) needles, 32sts x 36 rounds 10cm Foot length is easily adjustable. Yarn required: This pattern was created in collaboration with Yarn Love yarns using her Cinderella base, fingering weight sock yarn (80% superwash BFL, 20% nylon). Sample shown is knit in size M for foot length Europe 39, US 8, UK 6 using: Main Colour: Lupines 250m/273yds 60g/2.12oz Contrast Colour 1: Majesty (Purple) 40m/43.75yds 10g/0.35oz Contrast Colour 2: Martini (Green) 35m/38yds 8g/0.28oz
