What You’ll Need: Your Agnes PDF High Low Skirt Pattern interlining for the waistband 5.5 m bias tape for hem 1 invisible zipper – 25 cm long sewing machine colour matching thread Seam Allowance: 1 cm seam 0 cm hem Suggested fabrics: rigid woven fabrics (jacquard, taffeta). Our sample is made of taffeta. How much fabric do you need for your diy skirt? The table below lists the required fabric you will need for your size based on a useful fabric width between 140 and 150 centimeters. If you choose to use a different width or pattern (like stripes, plaids, etc.), you will need to adjust the placement of the pieces so the garment will fit your available width. Important! Test the fabric’s contraction before cutting by ironing the fabric at its maximum heat recommendation; this will ensure that your finished garment will retain its intended size after initial wash. Sewing Instructions How To Make Your Own Mullet Skirt – Sewing Instructions On the front that will be on top (piece 1) mark the crease lines and fold lines on the right side of the fabric, using different colors for the different lines. The lines must be marked down the full length. Fold the fabric along the fold line, creasing accurately along the trace tacks. Bring the creased line on to the placement line. Pin to secure on the waist area. Press the pleats with your hands, don’t use the iron. fig 1 Sew the top of the pleats at 0.5 cm from the waistline to hold them in place. fig 2 Overlock all the sides and center back of the skirt pieces Fold the seam allowance 1 cm inwards on the left side of the upper front (piece 1) and sew at 0.7cm. Sew front up (piece 1) and front down (piece 2) pieces together, right side with wrong side, on the waist line, at 0.5 cm. fig3 Sew the right side seam of the skirt, good sides together, back (piece 3) and front down (piece 2). Press the seam open. Sew the left side seam, front down (piece 2) with the back(piece 3), good sides together, and in between insert the upper front (piece 1) side. Leave about 15 cm open around the hem of the front down (piece 2) and then continue the seam. fig 4 Sew the center back seam by placing back pieces right sides together. Sew from the zipper notch down, and press the seam open Apply bias tape on the hem – start from the left side of the skirt below by placing the bias right face over the right side of the skirt and sew at 0.5 cm. Roll the bias facing to the wrong side of the garment. Make sure the seam is not on the crease line but shows on the wrong side. Using a top stitch, sew the folded edge of the bias strip in place. fig5 Close the seam on the left side seam (those 15 cm) Apply interlining on the waistband, fold it in half lengthwise and press it . Overlock the bottom edge of the waistband on its inner side. fig6 With right sides together, sew outer waistband piece to the skirt at 1 cm (aligning bottom edge of the waistband and top edge of the skirt). Press seams up. Place the zipper starting from the middle part of the waistband piece, down to bottom of the opening on the back of the skirt. Mark the waist seam placement on the second zipper side, because they should match when the zipper is closed. Pin the second seam edge to the zipper matching the waist seam with the mark. Starting at the top, stitch down the zipper tape close to the zipper teeth, stopping at the point where the lower center back seam begins. Repeat for the other side of zipper tape. Press the zipper lightly. fig 7 Sew together the inside of the waistband and the front of the waistband (on the side), making sure to fix the zipper in the middle (hamburger style). Fold the seam up and press. fig 8 Fold up the waistband seam and pin the inner waistband. Apply a 0.2 cm topstitch along the outer waistband, making sure to include the seam allowance and inner waistband in the seam. fig 9 Get To Know Us Better We’ve got a wide range of sewing patterns for both beginners and expert sewists which are suitable for many occasions.
