1900s Edwardian Trumpet Skirt Sewing Pattern
This pattern is for a Trumpet Skirt, a popular type of ball skirt in the late Victorian and early Edwardian Period, dated somewhere between 1903-1907. It features a total of seven panels, with the center front cut on the fold. The skirt is flat-lined. It fits snugly over the waist and hips and flares just below the hips into a dramatic, nearly 6-yard hem and a slight train. It features an 11” stiff interfacing at the hem, a 4” gathered dust ruffle, and hemmed with bias tape. The closure is at center back and features a large, hidden pocket inside the seam of the 8” placket; the pocket is suspended from the waistband with a small length of twill tape to ensure its contents do not weight down the back. It closes with hooks and eyes and snaps. Sizing: This pattern is suitable for a 28” waist and has approximately 48” hips at the fullest point. This was the average difference between waist and hips during the early 1900s as both corsetry and intense hip padding was utilized. Make a mock-up to ensure you have your desired shape and effect; size your pattern accordingly.
